Fees, rules and centres checked against RTA service pages and 2025 to 2026 announcements, October 2026. App menu names change with updates, so follow the closest matching option.

A Dubai car registration lasts 12 months. Miss the renewal by 2 months and RTA blocks your whole traffic file. Drive on an expired registration and you face an AED 500 fine and 4 black points. Renewing online takes a few minutes and costs AED 370 for most private cars, or AED 540 when the car needs a test. This guide covers each step of renewing a vehicle registration in Dubai: official fees, which cars need a test, how to renew online or at an RTA centre, what to do with a blocked file or a car abroad, and how Abu Dhabi and the other emirates compare.

Rules for Car Registration Renewal in Dubai

RTA car registration renewal follows 6 conditions:

  1. Valid insurance: The policy must be linked electronically and stay valid for at least 6 months, including the grace period.
  2. A passed vehicle test: Needed for most cars older than 3 years. The test certificate is valid for 30 days.
  3. No unpaid fines: All traffic fines on the vehicle must be cleared first.
  4. Renewal window: You can renew up to 150 days before the registration expires.
  5. Grace period: Registration stays renewable for 30 days after expiry.
  6. Personal attendance at centres: At a centre, the owner or a legal representative must attend.

Which Cars Need a Vehicle Test

RTA’s inspection page exempts new, unused, first-owner vehicles for 3 years from the year of manufacture or registration, whichever comes first. RTA’s renewal page adds that private cars bought from a local authorised dealer can be registered and renewed for 3 years without a test.

The exemption ends early in 2 cases:

  • Change of ownership: Every ownership change needs a test, whatever the car’s age.
  • Late renewal of a new car: RTA’s renewal FAQ says new cars skip the test only when they are renewed before the expiry date.

Cars that do not need a test can be renewed online only. Motorcycles always need a test at renewal, even when new.

Documents You Need

RTA lists no paper documents for an online renewal, because it checks insurance, test results and fines electronically. Have these ready:

  • New car from a UAE dealer, renewed on time, no ownership change: AED 370, online only.
  • Most cars older than 3 years: AED 540 (AED 370 renewal + AED 170 test).
  • Classic car: AED 790 (AED 370 renewal + AED 420 test).
  • Motorcycle: AED 390 (AED 220 renewal + AED 170 test).

Insurance and any unpaid fines come on top. The car insurance guide explains official insurance prices. RTA also charges late fees by vehicle category and length of delay, but it does not publish the amounts, so renew before expiry to avoid them.

How to Renew Car Registration Online in Dubai

To renew car registration online, use the RTA Dubai app, rta.ae or Dubai Now. RTA issues the new registration instantly once payment goes through.

  1. Log in to the RTA Dubai app or rta.ae with UAE PASS.
  2. Select your vehicle.
  3. Choose the service to renew vehicle ownership (registration).
  4. Let RTA check your insurance and test status automatically.
  5. Pay the fees by card.
  6. Receive the renewed registration by SMS and email, and add it to Apple Wallet or Samsung Wallet.

The RTA service page for renewing vehicle ownership lists every channel, fee and condition. RTA’s Mahboub chatbot, on the website and in RTA apps, can also process the renewal.

If your car needs a test, book and pass it first. The result links to your traffic file, and you can then renew online or at the test centre.

How to Renew Car Registration at a Test Centre

Most drivers with a car older than 3 years renew at a test centre in one visit:

  1. Book a test slot in the RTA Dubai app or on rta.ae.
  2. Drive to the centre and give your mobile number at the front desk.
  3. Receive a token by SMS and wait while the car is tested.
  4. Pay through the link sent to your phone once the car passes.
  5. Collect the vehicle ownership certificate and the registration sticker.

Since 2 June 2025, booking is required at Dubai test centres. At most centres you can still walk in for an extra AED 100, but 8 centres accept bookings only. Tasjeel Hatta needs no booking. People of Determination and senior Emiratis and residents are exempt from booking for certain services.

Common Test Failure Points and Re-Tests

RTA’s inspection brochure sets the full pass criteria. The test checks safety items such as:

  • Tyres and their condition
  • Brakes and the parking brake
  • Lights and reflectors
  • Exhaust emissions and fluid leaks
  • Window tint and body condition, including rust

If the car fails, fix the faults and return for a re-test. Re-tests need no booking and cost AED 50 for a light vehicle. To dispute a result, book an appointment with RTA’s Technical Inspection Committee, which decides within 5 working days.

Most centres open Monday to Thursday and Saturday from 7am to 10:30pm, and Friday from 7am to 12pm and 3pm to 10:30pm. Some close at 5pm. Sunday testing is limited to a few centres, including Al Yalayis and Shamil Muhaisna, so check the hours when you book on the test booking page.

RTA Customer Happiness Centres

RTA also handles registration at its Customer Happiness Centres:

  • Umm Ramool: A hybrid centre since August 2025, open 24 hours, 7 days a week.
  • Al Barsha: A hybrid centre since August 2025.
  • Al Twar, Al Kifaf and Al Manara: Smart centres since 2023.
  • Deira: Due to become a hybrid centre in 2026.

Smart kiosks at Deira, Al Barsha, Al Twar, Al Kifaf and RTA headquarters run 24 hours a day for renewals and certificate printing.

Special Cases

Blocked Traffic File or Long Lapse

If you miss renewal by 2 months, RTA blocks your traffic file and sends an SMS. To unblock it:

  1. Pay all traffic fines on the vehicle.
  2. Pass a vehicle test if the car needs one.
  3. Renew insurance so it is valid for at least 6 months.
  4. Renew the registration and pay the late fees RTA calculates.

Once the renewal goes through, the block lifts. If the registration has been expired for more than a year, guides such as dubizzle report a re-registration fee of AED 400 for a light vehicle instead of the normal renewal fee.

Renewing While the Car Is Abroad

If the car is outside the UAE when the registration expires, RTA accepts an inspection certificate from the country where the car is. The certificate must be ratified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the UAE embassy and presented at a Dubai test centre within 1 month. GCC nationals do not need the ratification.

Financed and Company Cars

  • Financed cars: The bank’s mortgage appears on all vehicle documents. Renewal works as normal, but transferring or exporting the car needs a mortgage release from the bank first.
  • Company cars: Company-owned vehicles are renewed through RTA’s corporate services under the company’s traffic file.

Exporting or Cancelling a Registration

To take a car out of the UAE for good, book an export test (AED 100) and apply for export plates and a vehicle export certificate through RTA. This ends the Dubai registration.

Lost or Damaged Card or Plate

Dubai’s registration card is digital, so a lost printout is no problem. Download it again from the RTA Dubai app, reprint it at a kiosk or order delivery. A lost or damaged number plate needs a police report before RTA issues a replacement.

Pay Fines Before You Renew

RTA blocks renewal while fines are unpaid. Check and pay them in 3 places:

  • RTA Dubai app or rta.ae: Shows RTA fines, including parking fines
  • Dubai Police app or website: Shows Dubai Police traffic fines
  • Salik: Unpaid Salik toll violations become fines on the vehicle and must be cleared

Car Registration Card in Dubai (Digital Mulkiya)

The car registration card in Dubai, also called the Mulkiya or vehicle licence, has been digital since 1 August 2018. RTA replaced the plastic card with a lifetime e-card. The card never expires, and RTA renews the registration behind it each year.

You can hold the card in 4 ways:

  • RTA Dubai app: Under your documents section
  • Apple Wallet: Available since May 2023
  • Samsung Wallet: Available since July 2024
  • Printed copy: Print it at an RTA kiosk, or order delivery from AED 20

The card shows the owner, plate number, vehicle details, and the registration and insurance dates. Print a copy before driving abroad, because border officials outside the UAE may ask for one.

Dubai Registration Rule Changes, 2025 to 2026

Car registration in Dubai changed in 4 ways over the last 2 years:

  • 29 March 2025: The new federal traffic law took effect and kept annual tests mandatory, with new cars exempt for 3 years.
  • May 2025: RTA’s Services 360 programme cut driver and vehicle licensing services from 33 to 15 and moved them onto one platform.
  • 2 June 2025: Test booking became mandatory at Dubai test centres, cutting waiting times by about 46% in the pilot.
  • August 2025: Umm Ramool and Al Barsha became hybrid centres, with Umm Ramool open 24/7.

Dubai registered 196,042 new vehicles in the first half of 2026, more than 1,000 a day, so booking a test slot early saves time.
