Car Insurance in the UAE and Dubai: Prices, Types and How to Buy Online (2026)

Prices, limits and rules checked against the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) rulebook and 2025 to 2026 market data, October 2026. Policy terms differ between insurers, so always confirm the final wording before you pay.

Two drivers with the same car in Dubai can pay AED 750 or AED 2,500 for a year of cover. Both prices are legal. The gap comes from the cover type, the car’s value, the driver’s age and the discounts each driver claims. This guide explains how car insurance in the UAE works: the official price limits, what each cover type pays for, the discounts most drivers never ask for, and how to buy, claim and renew without falling for a fake policy.

UAE Car Insurance at a Glance

Every vehicle on UAE roads needs insurance. The Central Bank of the UAE regulates all insurers and sets one standard policy wording and one price range for the whole country.

Car Insurance Is Mandatory in the UAE

Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 requires minimum compulsory insurance for every vehicle in the UAE. This includes vehicles entering or passing through the country. You cannot register a car or renew its registration (Mulkiya) without a valid policy linked to the vehicle.

Driving with expired registration or without valid cover is reported to carry an AED 500 fine and 4 black points. If the registration expired more than 3 months ago, the car is also impounded for 7 days. The larger risk is financial. Without cover, you pay for your own car, the other driver’s car and any injury claims yourself, including court-ordered blood money (diya) in fatal accidents.

Types of Car Insurance in the UAE

UAE car insurance comes in 2 main types: third party liability and comprehensive. Agency repair is an upgrade to comprehensive cover, not a separate type. Takaful versions of both exist for drivers who want Sharia-compliant cover.

Third Party Car Insurance

Third party car insurance pays for the damage you cause to others. Under the CBUAE unified policy, it covers:

  • Injury or death of other people, with no fixed upper limit on court awards
  • Damage to other people’s property, up to AED 2,000,000 per accident, including towing
  • Ambulance and medical transport, up to AED 6,770 per person

It does not repair your own car. Personal accident cover for you and your passengers is a paid add-on, priced at AED 120 for the driver and AED 30 per passenger. Third party cover suits older cars with a low market value, where full cover costs more than the repairs would.

Comprehensive Car Insurance

Comprehensive car insurance includes everything in third party cover, plus loss of or damage to your own car from accidents, theft and fire. The unified comprehensive wording sets these rules:

  • Depreciation on new parts: None in year 1, then 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% for years 2 to 5, and 30% from year 6.
  • Total loss: A car counts as a total loss when repairs cost more than 50% of its value.
  • Basic excess: Up to AED 350 for cars worth up to AED 50,000, rising to AED 1,400 for cars worth over AED 500,000.
  • Extra excess: Up to 10% for drivers under 25, 15% for sports cars and 20% for modified cars.
  • Standard exclusions: Floods and natural disasters, driving outside the UAE and off-road use, unless you add cover for them.

Agency Repair Cover

Agency repair means the brand’s official dealer workshop fixes your car with original parts. No regulation sets an age limit for agency repair, so each insurer decides. In 2026, most insurers offer it for cars up to 3 years old, and a few extend it to 5 years on premium plans. Agency plans cost noticeably more than garage-repair plans for the same car, so the price table below shows them separately.

Takaful Car Insurance

Takaful car insurance follows Islamic finance rules. Policyholders contribute to a shared fund that pays claims, and the insurer manages the fund for a fee. The cover, price limits and policy wording follow the same CBUAE rules as conventional insurance. Methaq Takaful, Salama and Watania are among the takaful car insurers in the UAE.

Car Insurance Prices in the UAE (Official Limits)

The CBUAE tariff sets a minimum and maximum price for each vehicle type. Insurers can price anywhere inside this range, and approved discounts can take the final price below the minimum. All prices below exclude 5% VAT.

What Drivers Actually Pay in 2026

Market prices in 2026 sit inside the official ranges, but they rose sharply in 2025.

In June 2025, Khaleej Times reported renewal increases of up to 40%. Average garage-repair rates rose from about 1.5% of car value during the Covid period to about 2.5%, partly after flood claims from April 2024. Prices have been steadier since early 2025, but renewals for older and luxury cars kept rising into 2026.

Why Electric Cars Cost More but Still Get a Discount

Electric cars cost more to insure because they are worth more and cost more to repair, especially after battery damage. The CBUAE tariff lets insurers cut the renewal premium for electric and gas-powered cars by up to 25%. That discount narrows the gap at renewal, but a new EV usually still costs more to insure than a similar petrol car in its first year.

What Affects Your Car Insurance Price

Insurers price each policy using 7 main factors:

  • Car value: Comprehensive premiums are a percentage of the car’s market value.
  • Car type and engine: 4WDs and larger engines sit in higher price bands.
  • Car age: Newer cars qualify for agency repair, which costs more.
  • Driver age: Drivers under 25 pay more and face an extra excess of up to 10%.
  • Licence age: Drivers with a UAE licence held for less than 1 year usually pay more.
  • Claims history: Each claim-free year earns a bigger discount.
  • Add-ons: Oman cover, natural perils, off-road cover and replacement cars raise the price.

Car Insurance Discounts in the UAE

The CBUAE rulebook sets 5 discounts. All are calculated on the minimum premium, and when several apply, the insurer uses only the highest one.

DiscountAmountWho qualifies
No-claims10% (1 year), 15% (2 years), 20% (3 years)Drivers with no at-fault claims
Loyalty10%Customers renewing with the same insurer
Special categories50%Medical workers, armed forces and police, civil defence, people of determination, people over 60 and claim-free individual applicants
Electric or gas vehiclesUp to 25% at renewalOwners of electric or gas-powered cars
FleetUp to 30%Owners of 5 or more vehicles

The rulebook lists claim-free individual applicants in the 50% group as well as in the no-claims scale. Insurers apply only the single highest discount, so ask each insurer which one it will use for you. This rule explains why some third party quotes fall below AED 750.

How to Get the Cheapest Car Insurance in the UAE

The cheapest car insurance in the UAE comes from claiming the right discount and comparing quotes. These 6 steps lower the price legally:

  1. Get your no-claims letter: Your current insurer must issue a free claims-experience certificate. Bring it to every new insurer.
  2. Ask about the 50% discount: Check whether your job, age or claim-free record qualifies.
  3. Compare at least 3 quotes: Prices for the same car vary widely inside the legal range.
  4. Choose garage repair for older cars: For cars over 3 years old, it keeps full cover at a lower price.
  5. Drop add-ons you do not use: Skip Oman or off-road cover if you never cross the border or drive on sand.
  6. Pick a higher excess only if you can afford it: It lowers the premium but raises what you pay per claim.

Buy Car Insurance Online in the UAE

You can buy car insurance online in the UAE in 3 ways: from an insurer’s website or app, through a comparison website, or through a licensed broker. Most policies are issued in minutes and link to the vehicle record electronically.

To buy car insurance online, follow these 6 steps:

  1. Gather your Emirates ID, driving licence, current Mulkiya and no-claims letter.
  2. Enter your car’s make, model, year and value, plus your driving history.
  3. Compare third party and comprehensive quotes from at least 3 insurers.
  4. Check the excess, agency repair period, Oman cover and roadside assistance on each quote.
  5. Pay online by card.
  6. Confirm the policy shows on your vehicle record before you drive.

The guide to check insurance status shows how to confirm a policy on the RTA, TAMM and MOI apps.

Car Insurance Brokers in Dubai and Comparison Sites

Comparison sites and car insurance brokers in Dubai show many quotes at once. UAE rules treat them differently:

  • Comparison websites must be registered companies. They cannot contact you directly to sell, and every sale goes through a licensed broker contracted with the site.
  • Insurance brokers need a CBUAE licence to arrange cover.

PolicyBazaar car insurance, for example, is sold through Policybazaar Middle East Insurance Brokers LLC, set up in 2018. InsuranceMarket.ae, Shory and yallacompare are other large platforms. Before you buy through any platform, check that the broker behind it holds a CBUAE licence.

Oman Cover and the Orange Card

A standard UAE policy covers driving inside the UAE only. To drive into Oman, you need an Oman extension. Some insurers include own-damage cover in Oman, and Oman third party cover is shown on a GCC Orange Card, which some insurers issue and others leave you to buy at the border. Check both before a road trip.

How to Make a Car Insurance Claim

Every claim in the UAE starts with a police report. Follow these 6 steps:

  1. Report the accident: Use the Dubai Police app, the MOI app or call the police. Take photos of the cars and the scene.
  2. Get the report: The at-fault driver receives a red report, and the driver not at fault receives a green report.
  3. Tell your insurer: Contact your insurer’s claims line straight away, especially if anyone was injured.
  4. Send the documents: Police report, Mulkiya, both drivers’ licences and the insurer’s claim form.
  5. Get the repair approved: The insurer assesses the damage and sends the car to an agency or approved garage.
  6. Collect the car: Pay any excess due, then collect the repaired car.

If you are not at fault, the other driver’s insurer pays under their third party cover. If you are at fault, only comprehensive cover repairs your own car.

Car Insurance Renewal in the UAE

Car insurance renewal is linked to registration. The RTA in Dubai, TAMM in Abu Dhabi and the Ministry of Interior (MOI) in the other emirates all check for a valid electronic policy before they renew a Mulkiya.

Renewal stepWhat to do
1. Start earlyCompare quotes 2 to 4 weeks before the policy ends
2. Pass the vehicle testNeeded for cars older than 3 years
3. Clear traffic finesUnpaid fines block registration renewal
4. Renew or switch insurerUse your no-claims letter to keep your discount
5. Renew the MulkiyaThrough the RTA, TAMM or MOI apps
6. Check the recordConfirm the new policy shows before you drive

There is no legal grace period for driving with expired cover. In Dubai, registration can be renewed up to 30 days after expiry before late fees apply, but driving in that period is still a violation.

Insuring a Used Car

When you buy a used car, the new owner needs a policy in their own name before the ownership transfer completes. Ask the seller for the chassis number first and check the car’s history.

Cancelling a Policy

Under the unified comprehensive wording, you can cancel a policy and receive a partial refund. The refund is 80% of the premium if you cancel within the first month, falls each month after that, and reaches nothing after 10 months.

Car Insurance in Dubai vs Other Emirates

Car insurance in Dubai follows the same federal rules, wording and price limits as every other emirate. Only the renewal channel changes:

Car Insurance Companies in the UAE

The UAE has more than 20 car insurance companies, both conventional and takaful. Several have changed names:

  • Sukoon: The new name of Oman Insurance Company since 2022.
  • GIG Gulf: Took over AXA Gulf in September 2021, so searches for AXA car insurance now lead to GIG.
  • Liva: Formed from RSA Middle East and National Life & General Insurance in 2023.

The side-by-side comparison of the best insurance companies covers ratings, agency repair and Oman cover for Orient, ADNIC, Sukoon, GIG, Tokio Marine, AFNIC, RAK Insurance and Methaq.

How to Complain About an Insurer

If an insurer rejects a claim or delays it without a good reason, follow these 3 steps:

  1. File a written complaint with the insurer and keep the reference number.
  2. Wait 15 calendar days for a reply.
  3. If the reply is unfair or missing, file a free complaint with Sanadak, the CBUAE ombudsman, online, in its app or on 800 72 623 25.

Sanadak accepts complaints up to 3 years after the event, as long as the case is not already in court.

How to Avoid Fake Car Insurance

In July 2026, the Ministry of Interior warned motorists about fake policies sold on social media. Buy only from a licensed insurer, a licensed broker or an approved platform. Never pay into a personal bank account, and confirm the policy appears on your vehicle record within a few hours.
